OUTCOME

Though I have gotten good reports on my follow-up visits to my surgeon and GP, and I am feeling quite a bit better, the outcome of my surgery (so far) has not been what I expected it to be.

Rather than dwell on the frustration or disappointment, however, I'm trying to stay focused on the positives and trust that God did not miraculously work things out the way He did for this to become my new normal.

One of the issues seems to be that many of the things the hospital dietitian told me I should eat when I transitioned from liquid to soft mechanical diet, and that I could eat or drink if I wanted to, were actually things that make symptoms worse and that are on the GERD avoid list.

Come to find out from my GP that just because they do not seem to bother me was not an indicator that they are okay foods for me to be ingesting, because symptoms can take up to two hours to manifest.

So now that I have transitioned from soft mechanical to regular diet, and have the proper information as to what I should be eating and what I should not, I'm being mindful of my choices and hoping that this unwanted outcome is only a temporary glitch on the path to recovery that will eventually reverse itself with patience and the necessary corrections.

  1. Dear Sandra, thank you so much for sharing this update! You have a wonderful outlook on life, looking at the positives! I really believe that this helps us to heal! And trusting in God is also very significant!
I have had diverticulitis 3 times in my life and I can understand and relate to your mention of foods and how they affect our body, sometimes not right away, taking hours (or even days in some cases) for us to notice the effects.
I am keeping you in my prayers.

  2. having a weird diet of my own, I understand well that some foods take a while to show you it's not okay to eat them. It can be RATHER frustrating. Wishing you well in your recovery. FMF12

  3. Praying that re "re-do" will clear things up and you will be back to feeling "normal" again.
I'm so sorry that the doctor really didn't give you complete information. It seems sometimes that the Drs. don't read your info. from other tests.

  4. I have had to make dietary adjustment over the last 10 years of so. The advice I got did not always help but I eventually figured out what works best for me. I am sure you will figure it out too.

  5. Good grief. It can be so hard to tell if a certain food has made us ill. If I get sick after eating something, I tend to never want to eat it again, when actually my illness will turn out to be something else. I hope with the help of the dietician and doctor, you can find the right foods now!

  9. 🌸 Sandra, I really admire your determination to stay positive even when the outcome isn’t what you hoped for. It takes strength to keep trusting God and adjusting patiently. I’m glad you’ve gotten clearer guidance now, and I pray this is just a temporary setback on your road to full recovery. 💛
